Meet Rich, the owner of News Whitsunday, a beloved local spot that’s been serving the community for nearly two decades. Rich has owned the business for the last three years, and he’s grown to love the variety and personal connections that come with running the store.
“One of my favourite parts about the role is that we get to see everybody in town,” Rich shares. “Whether it’s lotto, magazines, newspapers, gifts, or stationery, we meet and see everyone. I think I see most people once a week.”
This connection with the local community is what makes every day special. “There’s never one day the same here at News Whitsunday,” Rich explains. “It’s very varied, and depending on the day, and the jackpot, really depends on what the day’s going to look like.”
While the days may be unpredictable, one thing that’s always a certainty is the fun and camaraderie Rich shares with other local businesses. “A memorable interaction would probably be some of the things that we do when we all dress up,” he laughs. “Myself, the bottle shop, and the butcher — we’re all known as Scallywag Lane by the locals, and we all play each other in AFL. The winner dresses the loser. There are some very memorable moments with lots of people coming in to check out what we’re all wearing or doing.”
It’s these playful moments and connections that make News Whitsunday not just a place to pick up the latest magazine, but a true staple of the community. Next time you need to pick up your morning paper, why not say hello to Rich at News Whitsunday? Who knows, you may get an exclusive peek into Scallywag Lane’s dress-up challenge!
